This outlines what kind of chat and content is not allowed on Neopets. Please avoid these topics whether they are being referenced subtly or blatantly.
Sexual Content or Innuendo
Any reference to sexual acts, body parts in a sexual context, or suggestive language is not allowed—whether blatant or subtle.
Violence, War, Terrorism
Any mention, joke, or encouragement of violence, harm, terrorism, or glorification of such acts is strictly prohibited. This includes mention, depiction or discussion of real life weapons, firearms, ammunition or explosives of any sort.
Suicide, Self-harm, or Unsafe behaviors
Content related to suicide, self-harm, or unsafe behaviors is strictly not allowed because it can be deeply distressing, triggering, or harmful to others—especially young or vulnerable players.
If you see others struggling, please be kind and report the situation to us. If you're struggling, we encourage you to seek support from trusted individuals or professional resources.
Drugs, Alcohol or Medication
Mentioning or discussing illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or prescription medications is not allowed.
Examples:
Allowed: Vitamins, supplements, over-the-counter medications (e.g., Panadol, Tylenol), herbal remedies
Not Allowed: Illicit drugs, steroids, xanax, birth control or fertility medication
Why is this the rule even if it is legal and/or medically prescribed?
We know medication is a deeply personal and vital part of many players' health journeys. This rule is not about judgment, it's about keeping the conversation safe and accessible for our diverse player base, including younger users and those who may be triggered by sensitive topics.
Even if a medication is legal or prescribed to you, we ask that you avoid in-depth discussions here. If you want to share that you're managing your health, that's completely valid! We just ask you keep it general without listing the medications involved.
This helps us maintain a welcoming environment for players of all backgrounds, ages, and comfort levels.
Profanity
Any form of profanity, vulgar language, or masked swearing (using special characters, substitutions, etc.) is not allowed.
Discrimination, Hate Speech, Slurs
Any offensive language or remarks that judge or target others based on identity — including race, gender, sexuality, nationality, religion, or disability — are strictly prohibited.
This also includes dogwhistling — subtle or coded language that may seem harmless on the surface but is actually meant to express or incite discrimination, hate, or bias. Dogwhistles are often used to bypass moderation or signal harmful beliefs to like-minded individuals without being openly offensive.
Examples:
- Using “jokes” or euphemisms to mock a group of people
- Referencing stereotypes in a veiled or sarcastic way
- Phrases that seem vague or abstract but are rooted in hate-based rhetoric
- Using pet characters, names or customisation to provoke others
- Using real-life references, personas that incite discrimination
Even if you personally disagree or don’t find something offensive, it may still be harmful or discriminatory to others. Just because everyone doesn’t recognize it right away doesn’t make it okay.
We take this seriously and will take appropriate action when such behavior is found.
Religion and Politics
Personal beliefs and association may be shared respectfully, but we do not condone behaviour that offends or aims to recruit. If a discussion becomes harmful, offensive, or divisive, moderation will step in. Politics can be highly divisive and often lead to heated arguments, disrespectful behavior, or conflict, even if the original intention was harmless.
Many political topics touch on real-world issues that can be deeply personal, emotional, or controversial — including war, government policies, elections, and political figures. These discussions can easily shift from casual comments to harmful rhetoric, including hate speech, misinformation, or discrimination, which goes against our community guidelines.
Personal Information like names, photos, or social media
Sharing or requesting private or identifying info, even with permission, is against the rules. This includes sharing social media accounts or handles.
We do not allow uploading or sharing screenshots of another player's messages without their permission. If a conversation or message is shared in a way that could identify someone — whether through their username, avatar, font, neosignature, or quotes — and they have not consented, the content will be removed. This is to protect all players' privacy and ensure a respectful environment.
Spamming or trolling
Spamming is the act of posting repetitive, irrelevant, or excessive content. This can include flooding a neoboard with multiple topics, spamming gibberish, emoticons or random words to get a board to explode, advertising for votes without engaging in meaningful interaction and so on.
Trolling is when a player posts content with the intent to provoke, upset, or harass others. Trolling is not always obvious, even subtle or posts in jest can still cause harm, trigger others or escalate tensions, especially when repeated.
Surgery or Medical Terms
Mentions of general health conditions or surgeries are permitted, provided they are not graphic or overly detailed. However, references to surgeries involving private or intimate body parts — including breast, buttocks and genitalia are not allowed, even if medically necessary.
Examples:
Allowed:
- Cosmetic: rhinoplasty, lip fillers, mole removal
- Medical: knee surgery, appendectomy, dental procedures
Not Allowed:
- Surgeries involving breasts, buttocks, or genitalia
(e.g. breast augmentation, BBL, gender-affirming surgery, prostate or vaginal procedures)
If you’d like to talk about a personal experience, such as a medical situation, we recommend keeping the details general and non-specific. For example, you could say something like “I had surgery last week” without going into which part of the body or describing the procedure. This helps keep the conversation comfortable for everyone while still allowing you to share what you’re going through.
Serious Physical or Mental Health Topics
Mild references are fine, but graphic, triggering, or highly sensitive content is not.
Allowed:
- "I've been anxious lately. Any tips?"
Not Allowed:
- Describing abuse, trauma or harassment stories
- Extreme or rare conditions that maybe triggering
- Dangerous, uninformed advice
