Yes — Petpets are brave little companions, but some Neopian activities come with real risks. In certain situations, a Petpet may disappear permanently, while in others they may simply be away on an adventure and return later none the worse for wear.
When Can a Petpet Be Lost Forever?
Some Neopian activities are not for the faint-hearted (or faint-furred).
Turmaculus
Deep in Meridell sleeps the legendary Turmaculus — a massive, perpetually hungry Petpet who awakens for just one hour a day. During that hour, you may send your Petpet in to wake him, hoping for a reward.
But consider this: would you enjoy being screamed at while napping?
Sometimes Turmaculus wakes up grumpy… and when he does, he may devour your Petpet entirely. Once eaten, a Petpet is gone forever — no returns, no refunds, and no amount of wishing will bring them back. Let’s hope you didn’t send in anything rare.
Petpet Lab Ray
Hidden within the depths of the Petpet Laboratory is a miniature Lab Ray designed specifically for Petpets. Zaps can result in exciting changes — colour shifts, species changes, even level boosts.
Unfortunately, this ray is still wildly unstable. A zap may cause your Petpet to be permanently zapped out of existence. Science is cruel like that.
When Does a Petpet Disappear… But Come Back?
Not all disappearances are tragic — some are simply part of the adventure.
Grave Danger
Beneath Neovia lie cursed catacombs filled with dark magic that would flatten most Neopets instantly. Somehow, Petpets are immune.
When sent into Grave Danger, your Petpet will vanish for several hours. Their image will even be replaced by a puff of smoke on your lookup — alarming, yes — but fear not. They will return safely, often carrying prizes ranging from Battledome items to Petpetpets.
Despite the name, the danger here is mostly for your nerves.
Battledome
In battle, Petpets may temporarily disappear for a few rounds. This is normal behaviour and part of the combat flow. They will reappear shortly and do not suffer permanent harm.
They’re tougher than they look.
How Do I Safely Remove a Petpet?
If you simply want to unequip a Petpet without risk:
- Visit your Neopet’s Quick Ref page
- Click on the Petpet
- Select “Stop playing with [Petpet’s Name]”
This safely returns the Petpet to your inventory — no harm done.
Petpets are loyal, eager, and far too willing to put themselves in harm’s way for a chance at treasure. Some activities offer great rewards, but others carry irreversible risks.
If you’re ever unsure, it may be wise to err on the side of caution — or take inspiration from the Petpet Protection League, who firmly believe some experiments just aren’t worth the cost.
And remember: not every adventure needs danger. Sometimes the safest option is also the kindest one.
